World Breastfeeding Awareness Week: 1 – 7 August

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global celebration to champion breastfeeding. From 1st – 7th of August the aim is to raise awareness, share knowledge, and advocate for policies that support breastfeeding.

  • 2 in 5 children in low and middle-income countries are put to the breast within the first hour of life.
  • The World Health Assembly (WHA) aims to increase the global rate of exclusive breastfeeding to at least 50% by 2025.
  • Breastfeeding aligns with all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It’s a powerful force for positive change.

How to support breastfeeding at work

Employers play a pivotal role in a breastfeeding-friendly workplace. Here’s some of the things that can be put in place:

  1. Flexible Work Arrangements - New mothers need flexibility. Consider options like working from home, adjusted hours, or part-time schedules. A supportive work environment allows mothers to balance their professional and maternal roles.
  2. Private Spaces - Designate private, comfortable spaces where mothers can express milk or breastfeed.
  3. Breastfeeding Breaks - Encourage regular breaks for breastfeeding.
  4. Education and Awareness - Educate employees about the benefits of breastfeeding.

World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action – A global network of individuals and organisations dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide.
